A Colonoial and Cosmopolitan visit to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Welcome to San Miguel de Allende, a colonial cosmopolitan town in the central highlands of Mexico. The town's story starts with the name. In 1542 the town was founded by a monk named Juan de San Miguel, and took on the name San Miguel. In 1826 the towns name was updated with the addition de Allende, in honor of Ignacio Allende. Allende was a town native and royal army officer famed for being a leader in the Mexican War that liberated Mexico from Spanish rule.
From street art to galleries, the art scene here is thriving and growing. Roaming around, I stumbled across a gallery/shop that instantly caught my eye. When traveling, I look for souvenirs that I can place around my house, a reminder of the places I've been. Stepping into the gallery/shop of El Pinche Grabador, I was mesmerized and already visualizing his pieces in my house. A native to the city of Guanajuato El Pinche Grabador is an engraver utilizing his skills to create art that encompasses Mexican popular culture.
A cosmopolitan aspect of San Miguel is the gastronomy scene, which I have found mind-blowing throughout Mexico. Restaurant options range from cafes to higher-end options. There were many good meals had here, the best being from the Rosewood Hotel. Private dinner in a wine cave?
